Tips For First Time Cat Owners

December 12 2023

Have you recently adopted your first kitty? Our feline friends can be a bit ‘purrplexing’ to those who haven’t really gotten to know them. In order to get things started out on the right paw with Fluffy, it’s important to understand the unique quirks and character traits that make kitties so special. A Towns County, Georgia vet offers some tips for first-time cat owners below.

Never Force Attention On A Cat

This may very well be the golden rule of interacting with cats. Fluffy will decide when and how she wants to be petted or cuddled. (She also reserves the right to change her mind suddenly and without warning.) If you try to snuggle your pet when she isn’t feeling it, you’ll only end up scaring her. Win her trust by talking to her, offering toys, treats, and catnip, and by talking to her gently.

Feed A Proper Diet

There are some misconceptions about Fluffy’s diet. For instance, many people still assume that milk is a good snack for kitties. In truth, most cats are lactose-intolerant. Our feline pals’ menus should be based on meat, fish, or poultry. You don’t have to break the bank buying cat food, but it is important to make sure your pet is getting proper nutrition.

Give Your Cat Time To Adjust

Some kitties may immediately make themselves at home in a new place, but others will need to adjust over the course of days, weeks, or even months. Give Fluffy time to settle in.

Expect Scratching

Fluffy’s nail care habits can be frustrating. However, it’s important to understand that your pet isn’t trying to ruin your things: she’s just following her natural instincts to keep her paw daggers sharp. In the wild, cats rely on their claws for self defense, climbing to safety, and hunting. Provide your furry little diva with a suitable scratching post or board.

Consult Your Vet

Cats are one of the easiest pets to keep: they’re very independent, and pretty much spend their time sleeping, meditating, and looking cute. However, they still do have specific needs. Ask your vet for advice on keeping your feline buddy happy, healthy, and purring.

Be Prepared To Laugh

Having a kitty is basically like having a furry, meowing comedian around 24/7. Fluffy even manages to be funny when she’s sleeping. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself smitten!
